DHL WP U19s lose; U21s win

PUBLISHED: July 27, 2015

There were mixed results for the DHL Western Province junior teams at Absa Under-19 and Under-21 Provincial level this past weekend.

The Xerox Golden Lions Under-21 team extended their lead on the 2015 Absa Under-21 Provincial competition log with a good away win in Potchefstroom over the Leopards, whilst the Cell C Sharks and EP Kings delivered yet another disappointing result in Week Three of the competition.

The Golden Lions overcame the Leopards 29-12 in Potchefstroom to remain unbeaten after three matches, whilst the Toyota Free State moved up a gear by beating the Sharks 27-15 in Durban.

In Port Elizabeth, the EP Kings suffered their third defeat in as many outings by losing to 44-13 to DHL Western Province – the Men from the Cape showing great form to bounce back from their opening-round defeat two weeks ago.

ABSA UNDER-21 PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP – ROUND THREE:

EP Kings 13 (8) DHL Western Province 44 (13)

A strong second half by visiting DHL Western Province saw then ease past the EP Kings in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The visitors won 44-13 after only leading 13-8 at the break.

The home side held an 8-3 lead after a try by Malcolm Jaer in the 10th minute, but DHL WP responded well to the early pressure.

With flyhalf Brandon Thomson kicking well, EP were made to pay for some ill-discipline before the better team play by Province edged them further and further ahead.

In the end DHL Western Province scored six tries to two, a good reflection on the dominance they had in the match.

Scorers:

DHL Western Province. Tries: JD Worral, Johan Momsen, Christo van der Merwe, Leolin Zas, Ryan Oosthuizen, Penalty try. Conversions: Brandon Thomson (4). Penalties: Brandon Thomson (2).
EP Kings. Tries: Malcolm Jaer, Ace Jho. Penalty: Simon Bolze.

Leopards 12 (5) Xerox Golden Lions 29 (17)

The visiting Xerox Golden Lions team scored four tries in a hard-fought 29-12 win over the Leopards in Potchefstroom on Friday. The home team made a good fist of it early on and after 25 minutes both sides had only one try to show for their efforts.

A second just before half-time helped the Golden Lions relax a bit more and two more in the second half sealed the match as a contest. The Leopards never let up though and scored a late try when Bobby de Wee (lock) was in the sin bin.

Scorers:

Leopards. Tries: Estehan Visagie, Dean Stokes. Conversion: Schalk Hugo.
Xerox Golden Lions. Tries: Bobby De Wee, Gideon Koegelenberg, Clinton Theron, Cyle Brink. Conversions: Shaun Reynolds (3). Penalty: Shaun Reynolds.

Cell C Sharks 15 (3) Toyota Free State 27 (27)

The team from Bloemfontein shocked the highly rated Durbanites in the Kings Park Stadium on Friday.

The Cheetahs totally dominated the first half with powerful play by the pack and scored three converted tries before half-time, two of those from flanker Daniel Maartens, who scored his brace only two minutes apart.

The home side tried to rally in the second half and did score two tries, but they were never going to haul in the rampant Free State side.

Scorers:

Cell C Sharks. Tries: Innocent Radebe, Hyron Andrews. Conversion: Innocent Radebe. Penalty: Innocent Radebe.
Toyota Free State. Tries: Jasper Wiese, Daniel Maartens (2). Conversions: Andre Swarts (3). Penalties: Andre Swarts (2).
