DHL Western Province U19 suffered their first defeat of the season, when they went down 43-36 to the Xerox Golden Lions U19 in a hard-fought match at Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg on Friday.

Despite scoring five tries in an entertaining clash, DHL Western Province U19 fell just short of making it eight consecutive victories this season.

After the teams had exchanged early penalties, DHL Western Province scored the first try of the match, with scrumhalf Brandon Salomo putting his team 10-3 up.

The hosts hit back with a try of their own to level things up at 10-10, but DHL Western Province responded with tries from both their centres, as first Cornel Smit and then David Brits crossed the whitewash to put them 24-10 ahead.

The Xerox Golden Lions U19 worked their way back into the game as they got over for their second try, before kicking three penalties which saw DHL Western Province U19 take a slender 24-23 lead into the half-time break.

The home team were first to score in the second half, with a penalty and a try which put them 33-24 up just after half-time.

DHL Western Province captain Ernst van Rhyn came up with the fourth try for the visitors, but the home side responded with a penalty and a try to take their lead out to 43-29.

The visitors refused to give in, and when Smit got over for his second try with just three minutes left there was hope that they would be able to salvage a draw, but it was not to be as the home side hung on for the win.
