DHL Western Province U19 finished the SA Rugby U19 Championship as runners-up after going down 60-19 to the Xerox Golden Lions U19 in the final in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Having won 11 of their 13 games on their way to the final, it was a disapointing outing for a DHL Western Province U19 team which dominated the league phase of the competition to finish top of the log.

The Johannesburg team grabbed the early advantage as a penalty from flyhalf Jean-Luc Cilliers was followed up by a try against the run of play from left wing Stean Pienaar after they had absorbed some considerable pressure from DHL Western Province U19.

They extended their lead with aother penalty shortly afterwards, after DHL Western Province U19 strayed offside, with another try against the run of play putting them 20-0 up after just 22 minutes.

They were not done there, as right wing Tyreeq February dotted down for their third try to take their lead out to 27-0, leaving DHL Western Province U19 with it all to do.

They responded with a try from captain Ernst van Rhyn, who crashed over following an attacking line-out to get his team on the scoreboard.

However, the Xerox Golden Lions U19 hit back with a fourth try just before half-time, to give them a 34-7 advantage at the break.

DHL Western Province U19 were first to strike in the second half as big No.8 Juarno Augustus forced his way over for a try, but the Xerox Golden Lions U19 hit back with their fifth try to make it 41-14 with 30 minutes left to play.

As they searched for a comeback, DHL Western Province were forced to take some extra risks, which allowed their opponents to score a further three tries before DHL Western Province U19 managed to score a late consolation try through outside centre David Brits.
