DHL WP take Griffons down in Welkom

PUBLISHED: July 21, 2024

DHL Western Province scored 10 tries on their way to a convincing 64-15 Carling Currie Cup win against the Novavit Griffons in Welkom on Sunday.

It was an impressive attacking performance, which saw the visitors claim their first win of the campaign to take a full house of five log points from the clash to move up to fifth place on the standings.

The home side made a fast start, with a penalty and a try early on to go 10-0 up, but those would be their only points of the first half.

DHL Western Province responded with five tries and four conversions of their own to go into the half-time break with a 33-10 lead and the bonus point already in the bag.

Angelo Davids scored the first and fifth try, which came after the hooter and his teammates Luke Burger, Clayton Blommetjies and Jonathan Roche also managed to cross the whitewash in between.

Roche claimed his second early in the second half before the Novavit Griffons came up with their second against the run of play.

The DHL Western Province forwards got in on the act with replacement hooker Lukhanyo Vokozela and loose forward CJ Velleman both scoring from mauls.

The final blow came from a quick tap from lock Hendre Stassen who powered over from close range.
