DHL Western Province will play two friendlies in Africa during the next fortnight, which will see them come up against the national teams from Kenya and Namibia.
DHL WP will travel to Nairobi this week for a clash against Kenya on Saturday, June 7, before heading to Windhoek – where they will face up to Namibia the following Saturday.
Both Kenya and Namibia will be using these matches as part of a warm-up for their 2015 Rugby World Cup qualifying competition, which will also involve Madagascar and Zimbabwe, between June 28 and July 6.
“This is a great opportunity for us to keep some of our players busy during the enforced June international break,” commented WP’s Director of Rugby, Gert Smal.
“Our depth has been severely tested during the 2014 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament and this is another opportunity for us to have a look at the talent we have our disposal in the union.”
The DHL WP team to travel to Kenya will be announced on Wednesday, June 4. It will be made up of fringe members of the DHL Stormers squad and players that featured in the 2014 Vodacom Cup for DHL Western Province.
Said Smal: “Players like Stephan Coetzee, Jean Kleyn, Dylon Frylinck and Devon Williams have all contributed to the DHL Stormers in recent weeks, but they will also benefit from some valuable game time over the next two weeks.
“We will be
taking competitive teams to Kenya and Namibia, but, at the same time, we will also be able to blood some young talent and see how those players perform in different conditions away from home.”
Vodacom Cup coach John Dobson will take the coaching reins in both Nairobi and Windhoek, with Dawie Snyman and Labeeb Levy (his assisant coaches in the Vodacom Cup and Provincial Under-21 tournaments) travelling as his assistants.
Province will depart for Kenya on Wednesday evening and return to Cape Town on Sunday morning.
Next week the team will travel to Windhoek on Thursday morning, before returning home on Sunday.
