DHL WP set for Currie Cup title defence

PUBLISHED: August 15, 2018

DHL Western Province will look to make it a record 35 Currie Cup titles as the 2018 season gets underway this week.

The defending champions will only start their campaign next week, due to a bye in the first round of action, but will have to hit the ground running if they are to defend their title, with only a single round of action before the play-offs this year.

Having beaten Cell C Sharks in the final in Durban last year to claim their 34th Currie Cup crown, DHL Western Province’s title defence will get underway when they host Toyota Free State Cheetahs at DHL Newlands on Saturday, August 25.

The domestic rugby scene will move up a gear from Friday as the Currie Cup – proudly sponsored by Nashua and Direct Axis – kicks off what promises to be more than two months’ top-class action between the best seven provincial teams in the country.

The opening clash of the 2018 season will be in Nelspruit, where the iCOLLEGE Pumas will host Tafel Lager Griquas at 17h00, while the Toyota Free State Cheetahs and Vodacom Blue Bulls will meet in Bloemfontein at 19h00.

The Cell C Sharks, and the Xerox Golden Lions also have byes this weekend along with DHL Western Province. But all the teams are fully aware that every match will count this season, as they battle it out in a gripping single round, which will culminate in the semifinals and final on consecutive Saturdays, 20 and 27 October respectively.
