DHL WP see off Griquas at DHL Newlands

PUBLISHED: September 22, 2018

DHL Western Province scored six tries in a comfortable 38-12 victory against Tafel Lager Griquas at DHL Newlands on Saturday to make it four straight wins in the Currie Cup this season.

It was a dominant performance from the defending champions as they made a fast start and then defended their advantage in the second half to maintain their unbeaten run this season.

DHL Western Province did not waste time in getting the scoreboard ticking as a break in the 22 from Sergeal Petersen put them on the front foot for flyhalf Josh Stander to score after hitting the ball at pace.

Petersen scored his first try after exploring more space down the left wing and trading passes with Herschel Jantjies, with Stander slotting the touchline conversion.

Jantjies was next to score as a powerful scrum from his forward pack shunted the ball out for him to pounce on and dive over.

The next try came from big No.8 Juarno Augustus who finished off an attacking surge which began with a devastating step and offload from fullback Damian Willemse who had popped up at first-receiver.

Petersen got his second after chasing down a Willemse kick and then rounding a defender to gather his own grubber ahead just short of the dead-ball line.

Tafel Lager Griquas got on the scoreboard with an intercept try from their captain Kyle Steyn, but they went into half-time trailing 33-7 following a polished display from the home side at DHL Newlands.

Things got even tougher for the visitors when No.8 Conway Pretorius was shown a yellow card for a late hit on Willemse early in the second half, but they would be next to score as fullback AJ Coertzen rounded off a sustained period of pressure by going over in the corner.

DHL Western Province responded with a try from left wing JJ Engelbrecht, who showed impressive power and pace to score in the corner and seal the 38-12 win.
