Boland claimed top honours at the Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) Week for the third year in a row with a 30-14 victory against the Valke in the final match of the tournament.

The team defeated DHL Western Province 25-12 in Worcester last year, while they beat SWD 45-3 in Potchefstroom in the 2014 edition of the tournament.

Boland cruised to an encouraging 20-0 lead at the break against the Gauteng-based side, and faced a solid fightback by the Valke in the second half. However, they managed to score five tries to only two by the Valke to secure the 30-14 victory.

The final day’s action was thrilling as a handful of teams recorded big wins, while other sides had to work hard for the their victories. A total of 301 points were scored on the final day, with 1035 points during the three-day tournament, which included 168 tries.

SWD delivered an equally fine performance in their last match as they out-scored the Golden Lions Extraordinary Education team 56-25 after building up an encouraging 41-10 lead at the break.

Hosts, the Blue Bulls, and the Eastern Cape also finished the tournament on a positive note with big wins against the Griffons and Pumas respectively.

The Blue Bulls scored eight tries to only one by the Griffons for their 48-5 victory, while the Eastern Cape worked their way to a 22-8 halftime lead against the Pumas and then continued their strong form in the second half to secure a 39-23 victory.

The Golden Lions, meanwhile, defeated the Blue Bulls Extraordinary Education side 15-0 and the Leopards beat KwaZulu-Natal 24-10.

Week one of the SA Rugby Youth Weeks will conclude on Friday with the final day’s play at the National Girls Under-16 Week at HT Pelatona Projects Stadium in Welkom.

This will be followed by the National Girls Under-18 Week in Kimberley, and the Under-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week and Under-16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week at Paarl Gymnasium respectively, which kicks off on Monday.
