A gutsy and tenacious DHL Western Province scored a remarkable 21-16 semifinal win over the MTN Golden Lions to seal a place in the 2012 Absa Currie Cup Final.
Having gone into the final few minutes of the match trailing the defending champions at Coca-Cola Park by 6-13, DHL WP showed incredible guts to win the game and set up a final clash against the Sharks next weekend.
Tries by replacement Joe Pietersen and a try basically at full-time by captain Deon Fourie saw Allister Coetzee’s men score this impressive win in Johannesburg against all odds going into the final few minutes as they trailed on more than one occasion.
Demetri Catrakilis kicked two penalties, and Pietersen one, as WP also outscored the Lions by two tries to one in the final analysis.
It means that all three DHL WP teams – Under-19, Under-21 and the senior side – will contest all three finals in Durban next weekend.
Credit must go to the brave Lions who looked on course for a final place but WP brought it when it mattered most to seal a final place after the DHL Stormers won the Vodacom Super Rugby SA Conference earlier this year and the DHL WP side also picked up the Vodacom Cup.
