DHL WP go down in Joburg

PUBLISHED: May 28, 2022

DHL Western Province went down 33-10 in a frustrating Carling Currie Cup clash with Sigma Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Despite dominating possession, DHL WP were not able to finish their opportunities against a Sigma Lions team which claimed their first win of the season.

The home side struck first as hooker Morne Brandon forced the ball onto the tryline from close range. DHL WP got on the scoreboard soon afterwards with a Tim Swiel penalty, but those were to be their only points of what was a frustrating first half which was dominated by the referee’s whistle.

The Sigma Lions managed two more tries from wing Stean Pienaar and fullback Quan Horn and also managed to hold out defnesively, despite giving away a number of penalties in the 22.

DHL WP started the second half with real intent and got the reward as captain Nama Xaba got the ball on the line to make it 20-10.

The Sigma Lions were down to 14 with lock Ruben Schoeman shown a yellow card for repeated infringements.

The hosts got their first points of the second half with back-to-back penalties from Tiaan Swanepoel which gave them a 26-10 advantage.

Swanepoel added a late try and although DHL WP finished looking for a second try, it would not come.
