DHL WP go down in Durban

PUBLISHED: September 15, 2012

DHL Western Province suffered a 27-43 top-of-the-log Absa Currie Cup defeat to the Sharks in treacherous weather conditions in Durban on Saturday night.

In conditions more suited to ducks, than rugby players, DHL WP went down by two tries to four in a disappointing performance by the side that topped the log before the weekend.

It now means DHL WP slip to third place on the Absa Currie Cup log, with the Sharks in second place and the Lions just ahead of them on points’ difference. However, DHL WP do have two home games coming up – against Griquas next week and the Lions the following weekend.

To make matters worse they had two players red-carded (Jebb Sinclair and Tyrone Holmes) for punching on the night and then, later, replacement Wilhelm van der Sluys was sin-binned for a late charge on a Sharks player in a physical encounter.

WP trailed 12-16 at half-time as both sides struggled in the very wet conditions but the Sharks used their chances better, especially in the second half as they scored three tries to secure a bonus-point victory.

Replacement scrumhalf Louis Schreuder ran in two late tries for DHL Western Province, to give his team a glimmer of hope at the end as a fightback looked on the cards, but they conceded two more tries to miss out on securing a losing bonus point in the end.
