DHL Western Province have their Currie Cup play-off hopes in their own hands ahead of their final league fixture of the season against the Boland Cavaliers at DHL Newlands on Friday.
Currently in fourth position on the standings following their 52-31 bonus-point win against Griquas in Kimberley, DHL Western Province can guarantee themselves a semifinal place with a bonus-point win against their local rivals this weekend.
The Toyota Free State Cheetahs are assured of top spot and a home semifinal ahead of their game against Griquas this weekend, whilst the Vodacom Blue Bulls have a bye this weekend and will play in the semifinals, although it could be away from home, if the Cell C Sharks secure a bonus-point win to move into second position.
The Cell C Sharks and Xerox Golden Lions are either side of DHL Western Province on the log, in third and fifth place respectively, and the two teams square off at 17h00 in Johannesburg on Friday, in a match that will have a major influence on DHL Western Province’s fate.
The Cell C Sharks, Xerox Golden Lions and Griquas all remain in a shoot-out for a semifinal place, as Griquas could also make the play-offs if they get a bonus-point win against the table-topping Toyota Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
A win for the Xerox Golden Lions against the Cell C Sharks at home at Emirates Airline Park will give DHL Western Province the opportunity to move up to third place on the standings, if they secure a bonus-point win against Boland Cavaliers. Although if the Xerox Golden Lions get a bonus-point win and DHL Western Province beat Boland Cavaliers without a bonus point, the Johannesburg side will finish third due to their points difference being better.
Both DHL Western Province U21 and DHL Western Province U19 finished their campaigns on top of the standings, with DHL Western Province U21 winning four of their six games and DHL Western Province U19 winning 10 of their 12 games this season.
This means that they will both play in home semifinals, with DHL Western Province U19 set to face Toyota Free State Cheetahs U19 and DHL Western Province U21 up against Toyota Free State Cheetahs U21, with the dates of those play-off matches to be confirmed.
Tickets for entrance at DHL Newlands for the clash against Boland Cavaliers start at just R40 for standing room in the Danie Craven Stand, and are available from Computicket outlets, wprugby.computicket.com and the stadium box office, with season tickets valid for the match.
