The DHL Western Province Emerging team took top honours in the Southern Amateur Provincial Competition (APC), with a 38-31 victory over hosts South Western Districts in the final played at Outeniqua Park in George.

After defeating Border 69–3 and Eastern Province 68–5 on their way to the final, they were forced to dig deep to secure their win against a competitive South Western Districts side.

The team consisted of amateur club players, but they could always seek the advice of experienced campaigners such as Captain Ryan Olivier and Madeegh Davids.

Head Coach Jono van der Walt commented: “The pressure was on to produce a Southern Region Cup win and the guys delivered the performance to see us attain that goal.

“This was a great week with a great bunch of guys who can all hold their heads high as they represented their Province well,” he said.

Assistant Coach Ishma-eel Dollie was also full of praise for the side and paid tribute to the humility of the players who are of the best amateur club rugby players within Western Province.

The performance underlines the fact that the WP Club Rugby competitions is one of the toughest in the country, as the class of these players came through in the end.

These players and management will now return to their respective clubs to participate in the President’s Cup playoffs which start on Saturday and will culminate in grand style on 24 September 2016 when DHL Newlands stadium will host all three Super League finals.

The DHL WP Emerging team will reassemble later in the year when they take on the other finalists in the national competition.

Border 25-29 Eastern Province Rural (Plate Final)
Eastern Province 45-32 Boland (3rd/4th place playoff)
