While satisfied with his team’s comfortable 50-10 victory against the EP Kings, DHL Western Province coach John Dobson is adamant that they can still improve.
The hosts outscored the Eastern Cape side by eight tries to one in a dominant performance at City Park to secure their fourth victory of the campaign, but Dobson stressed that his team are by no means the finished article and still have areas which they need to work on.
“Naturally, one was pleased with the score, and certain aspects of the game. There were some areas of concern such as we did not show the same improvement in our scrumming as we have week-in week-out recently, and our breakdown was definitely worse than it has been of late,” he said.
However, Dobson was more than happy with the scoreline against a competitive EP Kings side, especially after his team’s disappointing performance the week before when they suffered their only defeat of the season to date in wet conditions against the Cell C Sharks XV in Durban.
“To score eight tries against a team that the beat the Vodacom Blue Bulls the week before was better after the nightmare in Durban, where we failed to adapt to those very tricky conditions,” he said.
DHL Western Province will travel up to Nelspruit to play the Steval Pumas on Friday night, with kick-off at 19h00, and Dobson knows that they will have to be at their best to come away with another win.
“We know that this Friday is another game completely, against a very good Steval Pumas team in a notoriously very difficult place to win.
“We have a bit of a blow in a few injuries, probably most notably to Grant Hermanus and Godlen Masimla, and a couple of other players we are waiting on, but we will still have a side up there capable of winning,” Dobson added.
