DHL WP Amateurs pipped at post

PUBLISHED: October 20, 2012

An unlucky DHL Western Province Amateur team went down 29-30 to the Golden Lions Amateurs in their National Amateurs finale at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday.

The WP side led 29-27 with the clock winding down in this winner-takes-all finale – after both sides had beaten Central champions, Griquas, in this three-way play-off – only to lose this final game of the season after full-time.

The visitors, the 2012 Southern winners, had kept their noses in front of the Northern champions, the Golden Lions, but a late Lions try saw them lead 27-26 with time running out.

The DHL WP Amateurs, however, won a kickable penalty with just a minute remaining to make it 29-27 in the visitors’ favor – despite having a man in the sin bin (winger Elmo Thomas), but the Lions ensured there would be one final twist in the tail with their dramatic winner after the clock had wound down.

The Lions had led 17-14 at half-time, with both sides scoring two tries each in this hard-fought encounter.
