DHL WP Amateurs march on to national glory

PUBLISHED: October 6, 2012

The DHL Western Province Amateurs side began their quest for national glory, with an eight-try 57-17 win when they took on their Griquas counterparts in the third of three clashes at Florida Park on Saturday.

With the DHL WP Under-19 and U21 teams both having secured bonus points wins over their Cheetahs counterparts, the WP Amateurs – the Southern SARU Amateur Provincial Competition winners – took EX300 exam on the Central champions, Griquas, in the third and final game of the day.

Province scored three tries in the first half to lead 24-0 at the break. Griquas fought back in the second with an early penalty and try, but Province proved too strong shutting out the game with three tries of their own – including a sparkling tryline to tryline effort.

The two teams then traded late tries before Province again dotted down after the hooter to make it 57-17.

Both Griquas (October 12/13) and DHL WP (October 19/20) will now face up 70-485 to the Lions – the Northern Amateur winners – in what is effectively a three-team shootout to determine the South African Amateur champions.

WP, previously, won the Southern Amateurs Week in Oudtshoorn early last month, having won all three their matches (against SWD B, Border and SWD A) with an average scoreline of 66-14.
