DHL Western Province’s Under-18 Academy side suffered a 19-22 defeat at the hands of SWD in Day Two action in Durban on Tuesday.
WP lost by just the three points in a ding-dong affair at Glenwood High School.
SWD took the lead by 3-0 after nine minutes of action, but DHL WP erased that penalty with a converted try by No.6 flank Ryan Davids just four minutes later.
No.8 Charl-Francois du Toit crossed the whitewash less than five minutes later – again converted by Adriaan Carelse – to make it 14-3.
But SWD hit back with a try of their own, before WP notched up another five-pointer – as Davids scored again (unconverted by Carelse) – to hand WP a handy 19-8 half-time.
The Men from George rallied strongly in the second half to keep Province scoreless, but, more importantly, they managed a crucial try and three second-half penalties to condemn WP to their first defeat of the week.
WP, who up until today had not lost a match in any of the 2013 youth weeks, began their Academy Week campaign with a huge 93-0 win over the Red Valke yesterday.
* Tomorrow (Wednesday) is a rest-day for all players at the Academy Week before the final day’s play on Thursday, July 4.
The WP Academy team will face up to the Pumas on Thursday at the Glenwood High School A-Field at 12h00.
