The DHL Western Province Sevens team will depart for London on Wednesday, determined to give a good account of themselves at the first-ever World Club 7s which takes place at Twickenham this coming weekend.
The members of the 12-man WP squad were presented with their kit at a small team function in Newlands on Monday evening, with coach Ricky Petersen also confirming that Stefan de Villiers would captain the team in London.
“We’ve had a good month and a half’s preparations,” said Petersen, “the guys are a bit nervous, I think, but it’s more nervous excitement than anything else.”
Captain De Villiers added: “We’re nervous, but very excited – and determined – to give a good account of ourselves and our union at the World Club 7s.
“We know it’s a big honour to wear the Blue & White of Western Province and, also, to be playing at the home of English rugby and representing our province on the international stage.”
The inaugural World Club 7s brings together, for the first time, some of the biggest names in club and provincial rugby from the northern and southern hemispheres, together with some of the emerging names in the Sevens game. DHL Western Province have been drawn in Pool A – along with Gloucester, New York and VVA Moscow Region.
