‘Currie Cup triumph to inspire us’

PUBLISHED: October 31, 2014

Fullback Cheslin Kolbe is excited about the future of DHL Western Province, following the union’s victorious 2014 Absa Currie Cup campaign.

DHL Western Province clinched their 33rd Currie Cup title after their 19-16 win over the Golden Lions at Newlands on Saturday. It was an impressive campaign considering they only lost two of their of their 10 league fixtures, while they eased past the Blue Bulls in the semifinals to secure a 31-23 triumph.

The achievement was also special considering it was DHL WP’s first home final win since 2001, which occurred in front of a massive and vibrant Newlands crowd.

Kolbe, who was one of the notable exciting talents in the squad, expressed his delight.

“While this is my second season in the Currie Cup squad, there were many youngsters who experienced the tournament for the first time,” Kolbe told www.myplayers.co.za.

“Winning the title has been a special experience, and it will motivate all of us that we can achieve many more milestones in future.

“We put everything that we could into the past 10 weeks and there was a strong bond among the players. We worked hard as a group, and that hard work has paid off.”

Kolbe displayed exciting runs and created many attacking opportunities from fullback during the Currie Cup. He has also been solid on defence and proven to have an accurate boot.

He has enjoyed the balanced gameplan Province have developed in recent months.

“No team can depend on just attack… or just defence. You need to have a balanced game plan if you want to be successful,” said Kolbe. “We’re happy with the way that we’re playing so far, and we’ll continue to grow heading into the new season.”

Kolbe added that the WP rugby family was proud of loose forward Nizaam Carr and wing Seabelo Senatla’s call-ups to the Springbok squad.

“Nizaam and Seabelo have been performing really well this season, and they deserve their call-ups.

“The team is really proud of them and we hope they will continue do well during the tour to Europe. The experience will do them a world of good.”
