Confidence booster for DHL WP

PUBLISHED: September 6, 2015

DHL Western Province picked up a full-house of five points at DHL Newlands on Saturday. More importantly, however, the Men in Blue & White hoops gained plenty of confidence with their bonus point victory over Griquas.

The 2014 Absa Currie Cup champions scored four tries to nil to pick up their third win in five weeks, but, crucially, their first since mid-August. “We’re happy with the five points. I certainly don’t think this win suddenly fixes things, but we needed this win from a confidence point of view,” said DHL WP head coach John Dobson on Saturday night. “I thought we played some good rugby – we bossed territory and possession, with Griquas coming at us with everything – but I was very frustrated. Our line-out was the poorest it has been all year, and then I couldn’t explain what was going on at scrum-time, that was a bit of a mystery to me. “The scrum penalties are something we are going to have a long look at, and probably write an email or two about,” Dobson told the www.wprugby.com website. Dobson, however, was unhappy with his team’s line-out performance on the night, adding: “We let ourselves down at the line-out, but, give them credit, they contested very well. Our maul was very good, however, (and) I don’t think we got the return on the maul that we probably deserved. “The other thing I was heartened by was our defence, we have been under pressure defensively for a while and we didn’t concede a try. Even at the end when they came with absolutely everything we made our tackles and got some dominance and turned over some ball,” he added. A big negative for DHL WP was the sight of skipper Nizaam Carr – leading the team in the absence of the injured Juan de Jongh (knee – MCL) – limping off with an injury in the 33rd minute against Griquas. “Nizaam has pulled a hamstring. He doesn’t look too comfortable,” said Dobson, who is facing some tough selection choices – especially at flyhalf, with the likes of Demetri Catrakilis, Kurt Coleman, Robert du Preez, as well as Dillyn Leyds, all in the equation to face the Sharks in Durban. “It is tricky to leave Dillyn Leyds out the team again I think,” admitted the DHL WP boss, “the flyhalf issue is one that we are going to have to think long and hard about because sometimes it’s as clear as mud.” DHL Western Province will take on the Cell C Sharks in Durban on Saturday, September 12 (kick-off 17h05), before facing the Vodacom Blue Bulls at DHL Newlands on Friday, September 18. The Province team, to face the Sharks, will be announced on Thursday, September 10, with head coach John Dobson giving an injury update in Monday, September 7. * CLICK HERE FOR DHL NEWLANDS TICKETING NEWS!
