Coetzee: ‘We love it at Newlands’

PUBLISHED: September 28, 2012

It’s been a tough week for DHL Western Province, with a few last-minute injury losses, but head coach Allister Coetzee is happy in the knowledge that his team will be facing the defending Absa Currie Cup champions at home, at DHL Newlands.

DHL WP have racked up successive bonus-point victories at DHL Newlands this season – beating the Blue Bulls 42-6 and Griquas 45-21 – and a win over the in-form Golden Lions would go a long way towards securing a home semifinal this season.

Coetzee, however, warned that it would not be easy against a side that has lost just twice this season and currently heads the log on 24 points (followed by the Sharks on 21 and DHL WP on 20).

“The Lions are a really good side, they’re the reigning Currie Cup champions and they’ve got a good pack of forwards. They scrum well, their set-piece is really strong and we will have to pitch and play well,” said the WP boss.

“They are a side that ooze confidence at the moment, but we are back at Newlands and we love it here and our preparations, despite the injury crisis have gone well,” he added.

Coach Coetzee has made three changes to the side that defeated Griquas last weekend – including one positional switch which sees Don Armand move from flank back to the second row due to the return of hard-working flanker Tyrone Holmes who sat out his one-match suspension (against Griquas).

Coetzee explained: “I don’t want to break the tight five combination, Don has done really well and moving him back there is the right thing. He has got a huge work-rate and I’m also happy to have Tyrone back.”
