DHL Western Province coach Allister Coetzee offered no excuses in the aftermath of his team’s 27-43 Absa Currie Cup loss to the Sharks in Durban on Saturday.
In a match which DHL WP would sooner rather forget, as they slipped from first place on the log to third, the DHL WP coach said there was no place for the poor discipline showed by his charges as the visitors were made to pay with two red cards and a yellow card.
“Our discipline cost us,” said Coetzee, when asked about the red cards. “We gave away some soft penalties and although we were frustrated our emotions were not channeled well on the night.
“Those two red cards (to Sinclair and Holmes) were unacceptable and we will deal with it internally. We have a protocol to deal with discipline in-house and we will deal with Jebb and Tyrone and then move on from here.
“Both Jebb and Tyrone showed plenty of remorse after the match, but what’s done is done and we will move on and focus on our next match.”
Both Sinclair and Holmes will face automatic hearings this week – as you do when you receive a red card – but Coetzee stressed that it was not the image that WP Rugby wanted to portray.
“It was two brain explosions,” said the DHL WP boss.
“Like I said, both Jebb and Tyrone showed plenty of remorse but it’s very important that we don’t dwell on this. Yes, it’s not the image that we want to portray for WP Rugby but we will take care of it internally and forget about it as quickly as possible.”
WP’s poor discipline aside, the conditions in Durban were very harsh on the night, after plenty of rain in the lead-up to the match but, again, Coetzee was not interested in making excuses. “Yes, the conditions were not ideal but the Sharks adapted better than us and made fewer mistakes.”
DHL WP will face GWK Griquas at home next week Saturday (kick-off 15h00) and Coetzee concluded: “It’s a tough assignment and we could be without two more loose forwards. Griquas are always a tough side and the big challenge will help us re-focus even quicker.”
