Week Six of Western Province’s 2015 Club Rugby season saw the Community Challenge champions beat their more fancied Cell C Community Cup champions!
False Bay, the 2015 winners of WP and Boland’s Community Challenge, beat newly-crowned (national) Community Cup winners, Durbanville-Bellville by 25-20 in Constantia at the weekend.
The Bay started like a house on fire and put three quick tries past Durb-Bell, but the class of the Durbanville outfit saw them being pipped narrowly in the end.
Maties were in a no-nonsense mood at the Danie Craven Stadium, beating Vics by 46-5 and UCT easily overcame a gallant UWC by 47-14 at the UWC Sports Stadium in Bellville.
Tygerberg continued their good form by beating Primrose 18-12 at Rosmead and Hamiltons underlined their class when they trounced newcomers Sir Lowrians by 60-12 at Stephan Oval.
Villagers – ‘newcomers’ back in the big league – lost 17-29 to SK Walmers at Brookside, while at the bottom of the table St Georges scored their first win of the season by beating Helderberg 24 to 22 in a closely-contested clash. Helderberg came back nicely in the second half after their visitors went into the break 19-3 up already and looked like running away with the tie.
In Super League B, title contenders NNK and Kuilsriver scored bonus point victories over Hearts and Collegians, respectively.
At Eikendal, Hearts came back strongly, but lost narrowly to NNK by 29-32. Kuilsriver put in a strong second-half performance to run away with the game by 47 to 31 after still trailing at the break.
Union Milnerton remained unbeaten by easily beating Raithby 54-19 and the topsy-turvy season of Bellville continued when they lost to Macassar 15-23 after the teams were locked at 10 all at the break.
Bottom of the Super League B table teams, Young Peoples and Pniel Villagers, finally got their seasons back on track and scored their first league victories of 2015. Peoples beat Rangers 32-22 and Pniel ran away with the strong Brackenfell 46-26 in Pniel.
In Super League C, Kraaifontein got back to winning ways by easily beating Paarl 45-11 and the other league contenders, Elsies River, continued their good form by beating Silvertree 24-10 at Malta Park.
Northerns are still searching for their first win of the season when they were once again defeated – this time by Langa 22-12 at Langa Stadium. Scottsdene beat Masiphumelele 40-25 and Strand easily beat Silverleaf 46-19 at the Gustrouw.
In the City League competition, Police beat Perseverance by 28-12 and Callies remained in contention with a win over Temp Cities 22-14. Watsonia lost to Hamediehs 15-20 and Tech Tuine beat league newcomers Western Zebras 14-9.
In the Northern Region, Van Der Stel retained their unbeaten record by beating Whistling Wheels 25-18 in Stellenbosch and Blue Stars United had a good win over Khayelitsha by beating them 20-10 at Khayelitsha Stadium.
In the Southern League Young Wesleys continued their winning ways by beating Titans 27-17 in Philippi and, in the Paarl League, Vineyards scored a good victory over Paarl Rangers at Daljosafat beating them 33-0, whilst Allandale scored a good victory over Albions by 10-8.
In the Simonsberg Region, Lwandle shocked top-of-the-table Faure; beating them 29-24 at Nomzamo Sports Grounds. This opened the door for Pumas to go top of the log with a good win over hosts Khayamandi, scoring 29 points without reply. Morning Star beat Blue Stars (Rural) by 19-12 in other action (at Devon Valley).
On Wednesday night, UCT play Villagers at Brookside in their last outing before the break. Friday night will see some Super League action with SK Walmers hosting Hamiltons, Brackenfell taking on Collegians in Brackenfell, Kuilsriver taking on Peoples at Kuilsriver, Union Milnerton hosting Macassar and Kraaifontein hosting Blue Jets.
The remainder of the club fixtures will be played on Saturday with all games kicking off 30 minutes earlier due to the DHL Stormers taking on the Rebels at DHL Newlands.
In other action at DHL Newlands on Saturday – kick-off at 16h30 – DHL Western Province will host the Vodacom Blue Bulls in the semifinals of the 2015 Vodacom Cup competition.
