Club rugby season to kick off in style

PUBLISHED: May 28, 2018

The Western Province Rugby Football Union club rugby season will get underway with a mouth-watering double-header on Saturday, June 2 at False Bay RFC with a SuperSport Rugby Challenge clash between DHL Western Province and Border before hosts False Bay take on Hamiltons.

Due to the water crisis in the Western Cape, the club rugby season has been postponed in order to give clubs a chance to prepare their fields and facilities adequately.

The revised fixtures and abridged season will get underway on June 2, with all eyes on the Phillip Herbstein grounds in Constantia where Gold Cup champions False Bay RFC go up against rivals Hamiltons RFC.

That match will be preceded by the SuperSport Rugby Challenge encounter between the as-yet unbeaten DHL Western Province and Border, which will kick-off at 15h00.

Head Coach John Dobson’s team will be out to continue their impressive start to their title defence, having claimed the inaugural SuperSport Rugby Challenge title last year.

President of the Western Province Rugby Football Union, Mr Thelo Wakefield, said that there is much excitement about the club rugby season getting underway.

“Club rugby plays such a vital role in our communities, so we are looking forward to getting the season underway.

“It is particularly exciting to see that we will have DHL Western Province and some top club rugby on show at the same venue in what should be a great double-header,” he said.

Tickets will be available at the gate for R20, with parking R20 at the venue as well.
