Clinical DHL WP U19s qualify for final

The DHL Western Province Under-19 team booked their place in the Absa Under-19 Final after beating the MTN Golden Lions U19s 24-14 at the Markotter Fields in Stellenbosch on Saturday.

After a tight first half, the Province team – who topped the age-group log with some vintage play – dominated the encounter against the Golden Lions in their Provincial Under-19 Competition semifinal clash. Province ran in three second-half tries, to add to the one they scored before the break.

Centre Justin Geduld (pictured), voted his team”s Best Back at the annual DHL WP Awards night earlier this week, scored a try in each half, with scrumhalf Jean Nel touching down and flanker Eital Bredenkamp also getting over the whitewash. Flyhalf Tommy Allan kicked two conversions.

Coach Nazeem Adams was very pleased with his young charges who have lost just twice this season – both away from home and both in the last second of play – en route to topping the log.

Adams added: “We”re not a side full of superstars, but we play well as a unit.

“It”s great to reach a final and there will be no resting on our laurels. A final and the promise of silverware is a massive motivator for this young unit. We will look for some more of the same as we focus on that final hurdle. We will continue to concentrate on our own game and on executing our gameplan effectively, as we have done all year long.”

The DHL WP U19s will take on the Bulls U19s – who finished second on the log and beat the Sharks 46-35 in their semifinal meeting – in next”s week”s Absa Under-19 Final.
