Classy WP U21s sign off with victory

PUBLISHED: October 12, 2013

The log-topping DHL WP Under-21 team confirmed their status as the best U21 outfit in the country this season by beating the Sharks U21s by 51 points to 24 in Durban on Saturday.

Having already been assured of a first-place finish on the log, irrespective of today's result, the Western Province Under-21s did not take their foot off the gas in their final round-robin match of the 2013 Absa Under-21 Provincial Competition.

It means that WP finished the regular season with an incredible tally of 54 log points (from 12 games), some 13 points ahead of their nearest challengers, the Bulls.

Province led by 34-5 at half-time, but lost one of their star locks, Gerbrandt Grobler, with a nasty ankle injury just before the interval. Loosehead prop Oliver Kebble, star No.8 Rayn Smid and replacement forward Jurie van Vuuren also suffered injuries.

In the end, WP scored seven tries to four as they recorded their 11th successive victory of the season, with just the play-offs now standing between them and lifting the

trophy in two weeks' time.

The WP U21 tries were scored by flyhalf Tim Swiel – who did not miss a kick at goal on the day – centre Johnny Kotze (two), fullback Craig Barry, prop Justin Ackerman and replacement hooker Stephan Coetzee.

Swiel finished with a points-haul of 26, taking him to the top of the overall points-scorers' list in the 2013 Absa Provincial Under-21 season.
