Bonus point win for DHL WP U21s

PUBLISHED: August 10, 2013

The DHL Western Province Under-21s claimed a handy 38-20 bonus point win over Border in their Absa Under-21 clash at DHL Newlands today.

Province wrapped up their four-try bonus point before half-time, as they led 24-3, and coach John Dobson made a raft of changes after the break and gave his entire bench a run in the second half against their determined but ultimately outclassed opponents.

WP’s first-half tries were scored by outside centre Kobus van Wyk, right-wing JP Lewis, flyhalf Tim Swiel and No.8 Carel du Preez.

Du Preez completed his try double in the second half, before replacement scrumhalf Jean Nel put the icing on the cake with his team’s sixth – and final – try.

Flyhalf Swiel kicked two conversions in each half for a personal tally of 13 points, as DHL WP made it three wins from four starts to close the gap on the Sharks who top the log by just one point.

WP and the Sharks will meet in a top-of-the-log battle at DHL Newlands next weekend.

“I was happy with our execution in the first half and we built up a nice lead by half-time,” Dobson told www.wprugby.com. “We did make a few changes in the second half, but, at first glance, I thought our play let us down a bit and we allowed Border back into the game.”
