Bonus-point delight in Strand

PUBLISHED: April 20, 2013

DHL Western Province scored a 34-27 Vodacom Cup win over South Western Districts in Strand on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts, playing this match at Helderberg RFC, scored four tries and were forced to withstand a late onslaught by the visiting side from George.

Flyhalf Kurt Coleman kicked all four conversions for his team, and also added two penalty goals, as DHL WP claimed their fourth successive victory of the season – that after starting the season with a draw and a loss.

Province led 20-13 at half-time and scored two more tries in the second half to stretch their lead to 34-13 before SWD launched a spirited comeback against their well-drilled hosts.

DHL WP coach John Dobson said: “This was always going to be a tricky game – as I said during the week – but we needed to back up last week’s win over the Pampas with another victory.

“There is still plenty to work on, but we’ve got the five points and I’m thankful for that.

“It was great playing in Strand this weekend and getting some great support from the people of the Helderberg Rugby Club,” concluded Dobson.

Province – the reigning Vodacom Cup champions – are second on the log in the South Section of the Vodacom Cup with 22 points, trailing the Sharks by just two points.

WP’s next fixture is against the Toyota Free State XV in Bloemfontein on Saturday, April 27 at 16h45.
