The South African Rugby Union on Thursday confirmed the SA Universities squad to play against Namibia in Windhoek on Saturday, May 4.
Chris Rossouw of the Maties, and Western Province, will coach the team and his assistants will be Brent Janse van Rensburg (NMMU) and David Manuel (UP-Tuks).
Included in the squad are players who played for the SA U20 Junior World Championship-winning team in 2012, as well as a number of Springbok Sevens representatives. The team was selected from the leading players in the Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield competitions this year.
One of those players selected from the Varsity Rugby tournaments is UWC lock Mthetheleli ‘Taz’ Fuzani, who, since the Varsity Shield, has worked his way into the DHL WP Vodacom Cup side – excelling in the second row for Province.
Only Stephan ‘Os’ Hamman – also of the Maties – remains from the SA Universities squad of last year that played under coach Chean Roux who, of course, had guided the Maties to three Varsity Cup titles between 2008 and 2010.
Tuks flanker Shaun Adenforff was a stalwart for the Junior Springboks last year during the successful JWC in Cape Town, whilst Clayton Blommetjies (UP-Tuks), Kevin Luiters (Shimlas), Hoffman Maritz (NWU-Pukke) and Ryan Nel (Maties) have all played for the Springbok Sevens team.
The squad will assemble in Cape Town on Saturday, April 27 for a week-long training camp.
