GWK Griquas host DHL Western Province in the Vodacom Cup Final in Kimberley on Friday, after the two top sides from the North and South Sections won their semi-finals last weekend.
The two best sides in the competition deservedly advanced to the final. DHL Western Province have not lost once this season, while GWK Griquas – along with the MTN Golden Lions the most successful Vodacom Cup side ever with four titles each – only lost one game in the league phase.
GWK Griquas advanced to their seventh Vodacom Cup final when they were simply too good for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in Kimberley on Friday, winning the first semi-final by 30-17. Last Saturday, DHL Western Province beat the Ford Pumas, who finished second in the North Section, by 33-20 at DHL Newlands in Cape Town, to remain unbeaten and qualify for a first final.
Despite finishing top of the South Section and are the only unbeaten side in the competition, the venue of the final is, GWK Park, Kimberley, the venue of the top team from the North Section. This is in accordance to a decision taken last year that the venue of the final of the Vodacom Cup will alternate between north and south (should teams from the relevant section reach the final). Last year the final was held at the venue of the top team from the south that made the final (Pampas XV in Potch) and this year it is at the home ground of the top team from the north, GWK Griquas, that made the final (Kimberley).
