Plucky WP U21s fall at final hurdle

PUBLISHED: October 27, 2012

The DHL Western Province Under-21 side went down 13-22 to the Blue Bulls Under-21s in their Absa U21 Provincial Final at Mr Price Kings Park in Durban on Saturday.

John Dobson”s side trailed 6-12 at half-time and, despite their best efforts, were unable to haul in their star-studded opponents who boasted whole host of SA Under-20 players in the mix.

A 49th minute Damian van Wyk try put the Bulls ahead by 19-6, but the visitors were by no means out of it – until a 69th minute Tony Jantjies just put the Bulls two scores ahead going into the final online casino ten minutes.

To their credit, the WP U21s refused to give up – a late try by replacement Clearance Khumalo, from a Godlen Masimla kick-ahead, giving them some hope.

However, with just four minutes left on the clock there was not time for the WP youngsters to score twice.

Whilst the team will be disappointed after going down, they did very well to make it into the final after battling with injuries and senior team call-ups throughout the 2012 season.

It does prove, however, that there is plenty young talent within the union – with six Under-21 players playing in the senior Absa Currie Cup Final later on – all of which bodes well for future years in Cape Town.
