DHL Western Province are up aganst the Phakisa Pumas in a Carling Currie Cup clash at DHL Newlands tonight. Conditions are cool, still and dry after some light showers earlier in the day.
A late change to the DHL WP team as tighthead prop Frans Malherbe is ruled out through illness. Lee-Marvin Mazibuko comes into the starting line-up on debut and Kwenzo Blose comes onto the bench.
0 – Kick-off in dry and still conditions at DHL Newlands as the sun sets behind Table Mountain. Early attacking scrum for DHL WP 40 metres out and they go through the phases but the attacking sequence is stopped because there is a Pumas player down.
3 – Tim Swiel leaves the field after taking a knock to the jaw and Kade Wolhuter replaces him at flyhalf.
6 – A kick goes out on the full and the Phakisa Pumas get two attacking line-outs after a maul of theirs is collapsed. The DHL WP defence holds up well and they force a knock-on on the tryline.
10 – DHL WP wina breakdown penalty on halfway after clearing their line and then kick into the corner. Jaco Coetzee comes close to scoring but the Pumas win the breakdown penalty this time.
16 – DHL WP on the attack and there is an overlap but a pass from Scarra Ntubeni is intercepted. The Pumas keep hold of it and their fullback wriggles over to score and put them 5-0 up.
20 – Plenty of breakdown penalties flowing both ways at DHL Newlands and DHL WP move into opposition territory where they can launch another attacking sequence.
25 – The ball is spilled on attack again and the Pumas counter-attack, but a grubber through goes too far and the ball goes dead.
27 – DHL WP set a maul and then it goes to inside centre Rikus Pretorius but the Pumas are awarded a breakdown penalty. Another grubber is kicked through but the Pumas knock it on just before the tryline so DHL WP have a defensive scrum.
30 – DHL WP on the attack again and a high tackle from Phakisa Pumas lock Le Roux Roets sees him shown a yellow card. Kade Wolhuter slots the penalty to reduce the Phakisa Pumas lead to 5-3.
35 – DHL WP go straight back on the attack with a series of driving mauls, exploiting their one-man advantage up front. The ball is lost forward in the 22 so the Pumas have a scrum.
38 – A big scrum wins a penalty in the 22, so they kick it into the corner and hooker Scarra Ntubeni scores in the corner from a powerful maul. That puts DHL WP 8-5 up just before half-time.
40 – Half-time at DHL Newlands and DHL WP take an 8-5 advantage into the break.
42 – Good patience on attack from DHL WP as they come from their own half to score. The money ball comes from Tristan Leyds who finds Angelo Davids and the wing steps a few before scoring. That takes the lead out to 13-5.
48 – Another powerful maul and another try for hooker Scarra Ntubeni as DHL WP take their lead out to 18-5 with 30 mins left to play.
52 – The Phakisa Pumas get a scrum after the restart is knocked on and a high tackle in front of the poles gives Devon Williams the chance to slot a penalty which reduces DHL WP’s lead to 18-8.
55 – DHL WP back on the attack and they are awarded a penalty of their own. Wolhuter slots the penalty to take the lead out to 21-8.
58 – DHL WP on the attack again as they hammer away at the tryline, but somehow the Pumas rip it free and clear their lines. Davids and Willemse get back to clean it up.
62 – Phakisa Pumas on the attack this time and Van Rhyn is blown up for not rolling away so Williams kicks another easy penalty to make it 21-11.
67 – DHL WP on the coutner-attack this time and Rikus Pretorius finds some space out wide. He puts a grubber into touch just short of the tryline.
73 – A series of powerful scrums from DHL WP, but the ref blows the other way and the Phakisa Pumas have an attacking opportunity from a line-out in the 22. Herschel Jantjies is shown a yellow card for repeated infringements from his team.
78 – DHL WP show great resolve on defence a try is held up and the Pumas are forced back before the ball is turned over and cleared.
79 – DHL WP blown up for playing the ball on the ground so Williams kicks another penalty to give the visitors the losing bonus point.
81 – A try after the hooter from Steven Kitshoff secures the bonus point for DHL WP. They claim a four-try 28-14 win.
