Steenberg High School’s assembly exploded in applause on Monday when rugby heroes Sikhumbuzo Notshe and Siya Kolisi from DHL Western Province took to the stage.
The players were there to launch Currie Cup partner DirectAxis’ school scholarship programme, which will see the financial services company provide R250 000 to cover school fees and other education-related expenses for school learners. Fifty scholarships of R5 000 each will be awarded.
Answering a question from one of the learners about the challenges he needed to overcome to be a professional rugby player, Springbok and DHL Western Province flanker Siya Kolisi told the assembly: “The most important thing is the people who you surround yourself with. Keep yourself around people who motivate you.”
He emphasised the importance of hard work, enjoying what you do and also advised: “Don’t make excuses about where you came from.”
Sikhumbuzo Notshe told the learners how his family inspired and supported him. He said that although his parents weren’t wealthy and he didn’t have access to the best equipment, “you don’t make excuses”. He recalled how he would need to make sure a pair of boots lasted for a season or more.
Steenberg High School was selected for the event because of its proximity to DirectAxis’ head office in Diep River and its proud rugby tradition. Former Stormers and Springbok prop, Eddie Andrews, attended the school.
Some learners from the school will get to see a Currie Cup game when DHL Western Province next play at DHL Newlands. DirectAxis will provide 50 tickets, transport and supporters packs.
“Our business is about helping people take advantage of life’s opportunities. Giving these young learners and others around the country a chance to see a Currie Cup game, is part of that. The scholarship programme to support learners is another,” said Emanuel Cristaudo, CEO of DirectAxis Financial Services.
Any high school or primary school learner, parent or guardian can enter for a DirectAxis scholarship by visiting www.yoursupportplayer.co.za The successful entrants will be announced on 14 November 2016. The scholarships will be paid directly to the learners’ schools.
