The WP Club Rugby season got back underway over the last weekend. Most clubs returned from a well-deserved mid-season break rejuvenated and ready to chase the league titles.
In Super League A, NNK caused a major upset as they defeated the more fancied Belhar 27–26.
The Super League A newcomers will be hoping this win sets the tone for the rest of the season as they are in desperate need of more wins to avoid relegation.
False Bay retained their undefeated status and remained top of the log as they defeated Durbell 33-27 in Durbanville. This win ensures they remain ahead of rivals Tygerberg and Hamiltons as the elusive possible 3rd qualifying slot for the Gold Cup later in the year remains wide open. The battle to avoid relegation is just as fierce with possibly up to five teams still in danger of being relegated.
In Super League B, Hamlets were far too strong for Goodwood as they ran away 87–3 winners in Mamre and took top spot in the league. Villager defeated Young Peoples 25–10 in Paarl, Pniel Villagers defeated Kraaifontein 40–15 and St Georges snatched victory at the death against Hands & Heart as they ran out 19–13 winners in Eikendal. Goodwood and Strand face certain relegation and desperately require a win.
In Super League C, Scottsdene thumped Masiphumelele 60–10, Paarl defeated Raithby Universals 28–23, Kylemore beat Silverleaf 24–18, while Elsies River United beat Lagunya 29–24. Paarl and Kylemore are joint leaders in this league and the next few rounds fixtures will determine the ultimate champions. Unless a drastic change in form occurs Hamediehs, Masi and Silverleaf face a certain chop from the super leagues.
In the City League Manenberg Rangers pipped their traditional rivals Busy Bees 17–10, although Busy Bees remained top of the log. With this win they both still look strong contenders for qualification to the Promotion League. Caledonian Roses were far too strong for Watsonia as they ran out 41–7 winners and signalled their intention to challenge for the third Promotion League spot, but they will have to fight it out with Police and Silvertree who both have had good seasons so far. Temp/Cities went down to Silvertree 17–36 and Police thumped Perseverance 98–5.
In the Southern League, Retreat beat Rocklands 7–5 and thereby cemented their strong hopes to qualify for the Promotion League. Young Wesley have all but won this league after remaining unbeaten with one more match to play.
In the Northern League, Vineyards and All Saints already qualified for the Promotion League. Whistling Wheels thumped Van Der Stel 67–26 while Blakes went down to Stel/Cor 24–55.
Meanwhile in the Paarl Region, Allandale retained their unbeaten rub when they defeated Young Gardens 48–28. Lower Paarl continued their good form and 31–23.
