DHL Western Province Under-19 started their season in fine style with a convincing 50-18 victory against the Toyota Free State Cheetahs U19 in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
The visitors took a slender 15-13 lead into the half-time break, but took the game away from the Free State side in the second half, eventually running in seven tries at Old Greys.
Both of DHL Western Province U19’s tries in the first half came from the front row, as first loosehead prop Wikus Groenewald and then hooker Matt Luc Wiseman crossed the whitewash.
Flyhalf Jordan Chait was shown a yellow card, but that was not enough to prevent them taking a two-point advantage into the half-time break.
The second half was one-way traffic, with the home side only managing to score one tries whilst DHL Western Province ran in five.
A brace from wing Nico Leonard, and further five-pointers from fullback Tristan Leyds, wing Tumi Mogoje and replacement Ryan Muller put the seal on a convincing victory.
