The Western Province Rugby Football Union club rugby season is nearing the mid-season break and all logs are shaping nicely.
In the Super League A action, the top of the table clash between hosts False Bay and Tygerberg delivered everything that was expected. The Bay eventually downed a stubborn Tygerberg 30-20 to remain top of the standings and remain one of three teams still unbeaten in the league.
Hamiltons had to fight until the last moments in the match to down a gallant Belhar 22-19 at Green Point while the other unbeaten team Maties had a break last weekend. UCT suffered another shock defeat at the hands of their student neighbors UWC who ran out winners 29-14.
At the bottom of the table the fight to avoid relegation is also heating up with Primrose picking much needed points against NNK as they beat them 24-18 and the topsy turvy season of Kuilsriver (back in the super league A for 2016) continued as they squandered a 15 point half time lead to end up losing against league new comers Brackenfell 20-22.
SK Walmers shocked Gold Cup 2016 participants Durbell 19-12 at the Green Point Track on Friday night and the men from Durbanville will have to quickly get back to winning ways if they want to ensure another solid season.
In Super League B action, Hamlets strengthened their lead at the top of the log with a narrow 14-13 win over Violets at Chukker Road who faces relegation if they continue on their current form.
Collegians meanwhile beat St Georges by the similar margin (14-13) in Lentegeur. The other relegation contenders Goodwood secured their first win of the season with a solid 55-27 win over Macassar and the woes of Strand continued as they were thumped by Union Milnerton who remained unbeaten so far in the season.
Milnerton beat Strand 75-29. The slow start of Helderberg continued as they went down to Villager 29-30 and currently languishes in 9th place.
In Super League C, Rangers march on strongly to win the league as they remain unbeaten. This week they beat bottom of the log Silverleaf 35-3 while Franschhoek turned in a workmanlike performance to down Paarl 30-23.
Franschhoek together with Young Stars and Paarl looks to be the only teams that will challenge Rangers for the league title. At the bottom of the table league newcomers Hamediehs and Lagunya faces relegation after one season in the league together with Silverleaf and Scottsdene.
The nightmare season for Scottsdene continues and they need to urgently turn around their form to remain in this league as the very proud club will face relegation to the regional leagues of club rugby for the first time in many years.
The City league served up some great action over the weekend with Busy Bees and Silvertree both ending on the winning side. Silvertree beat Young Ideas 18-12 at Malta Park. Busy Bee will hope to once again qualify for the Promotion league together with CPUT Gardens and Manenberg Rangers.
In the Southern League, Young Wesleys retained their unbeaten record and remain top of the table with a solid win over Retreat 11-5 at Allenby Drive. Eersterivier kept their title hopes alive when they beat Peninsula 20-15 and remains the only other unbeaten side in this league. Young Wesleys, Eersterivier, Retreat and Rocklands will fight it out for the three qualifying positions in the Promotion League in the second half of the season.
In the Northern League, Vineyards confirmed their hopes to play in the Super League C next year as they remain unbeaten in Paarl beating Van Der Stel 55-8. The nightmare season for Strand Pioneers continued when they were beaten by Blue Stars United 24-59 at Abbatoir.
All Saints, Blue Stars and Van Der Stel will fight for the two remaining qualifying positions for Promotion League as Vineyards seem certain to qualify in position one.
Lower Paarl and Allandale remained unbeaten in the Paarl League. Allandale beat Paarl Rangers 37-10 and Lower Paarl beat Albions 31-5 as they both bid for league honors.
In the Simonsberg Region Morning Star beat Evergreens 36-21 as they continue to chase league honors. Defending champions of 2015 Phizantekraal languishes in second place and will chase hard to retain their title in the second half of the season. Evergreens and Wanderers will also continue their chase for the league honours.
