Not your ordinary league

The Simonsberg Rugby Union Farm League kicked-off in 2009 under the watchful eye of Thelo Wakefield, Herman Abrahams and Zelt Marais of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU).

Eric Davids, Chrisjan Rhodes (the secretary, treasurer and union rep at WPRFU) and Trevis Davids (Chairman) are the founding members and their aim has been to establish their own rugby region between Franschhoek and the Faure Wine Estate.

The Farm League’s four-pronged vision for its players is to:
– Decrease alcohol and drug usage in the farming community
– Allow rugby to flourish in the farming community
– Maintain a healthy lifestyle and decrease hardships through rugby
– Build a respectable community.

The Simonsberg Rugby Union, played at First XV and Second XV level, is affiliated to the WPRFU, which means they have to meet the union’s criteria when it comes to affiliation and putting on matches.

Of course, given the Farm League’s affiliation to the WPRFU, the union has provided the competing clubs (players and administrators) with opportunities to do rugby courses (refereeing, coaching and administration) and online registration training, and also supplied them with balls and tackle bags.

The following eight teams (in order of their current first team league standings) play in the Simonsberg Rugby Union Farm League at first and second XV level: La Motte, Faure, Pumas, Excelsiors, Lwandle, Lanquedoc, Blue Stars (Rural), and Blue Swallows.

The 2013 season will end with two knockout competitions. The semifinals, at First and Second XV level (based on log positions), will take place on August 24, with the finals scheduled for the following week (August 31).

A Top Eight knockout competition for the first and second league teams will take place on September 7 and 14. All monies raised in both competitions will be shared among the eight clubs in the Simonsberg League.
