Hamiltons are the 2015 President’s Cup winners, after edging out Durbanville-Bellville by 23-19 in a hard-fought Super League A Final, which was played on Heritage Day at DHL Newlands.
Hamiltons walked off with the big prize in front of a lively DHL Newlands crowd, all the supporters present having brought plenty of voice and spirit in all three finals on Thursday.
The team from Green Point – the oldest club in South Africa – led by 11-8 at half-time, both teams having managed a try each in the first half, Monty Dumond adding two penalties to the one of Tiaan Radyn for Durb-Bell.
Durb-Bell, the 2014 President’s Cup winners and 2015 Cell C Community Cup champions, scored the only try of the second half through right-wing Brendon April, but the boot of Dumond kept Hamiltons’ noses in front throughout.
Durb-Bell showed their champion quality, however, as they kept the pressure on Hammies in the closing stages – even forcing their way over the goalline with two minutes left on the clock, only to be held up by some desperate Hamiltons defence.
* In Super League B action, Hands & Heart edged out Union Milnerton by 32-26 to lift their division title, after being forced to repel a serious wave of attack from the team from Milnerton in the closing stages.
Hands & Heart, who boasted the best support on the day at DHL Newlands, led by 15-14 at half-time.
** In the Super League C Final, Young Stars overturned a 13-23 half-time deficit to eventually defeat Kraaifontein in a kick-out, after the match finished at 30-30 in regulation time.
Young Stars won the kick-out by 2-1.
