Proud DHL WP coach praises Craven Week charges

DHL Western Province’s 2015 Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week team re-wrote the record books in fine style at Stellenbosch’s Paul Roos fields on Saturday, leaving coach Elmo Wolfaardt a very proud man.

DHL WP’s best Under-18 schoolboy players scored a record-breaking 95-0 win over Eastern Province, giving them a 100% record after three matches as they were crowned the unofficial Craven Week winners for the second time in three years.

Not only was it the highest ever score in a Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week tournament finale, but it was also the biggest winning margin and just the third time that one team has failed to score a point in the last match.

“I am very proud of the guys,” DHL WP’s Craven Week coach, Elmo Wolfaardt, told the www.wprugby.com website.

“We had a tough start to the tournament (against the Blue Bulls) but the guys showed a great improvement over our three matches and Saturday’s performance was obviously one that will be remembered for some time.”

Wolfaardt added: “This is a tough tournament – you play three matches in six days and you need to be at your best throughout.

“I always thought the Bulls would be tough opponents and once we drew them (the Bulls) in our opening match we knew that winning that first match would put us on the high road so to speak.”

Whilst loath to single out individual players in his team, a big plus for Wolfaardt is that the likes of lock Salmaan Moerat, loose forward Khanya Ncusane, flyhalf Damian Willemse and centre Manuel Rass are all still in Grade 11, whilst a host of the all-conquering Coca-Cola U18 Academy Week – who went through their campaign unbeaten in Vanderbijlpark earlier this month – will also be eligible for Craven Week selection in 2016.

“It augurs well for us,” admitted Wolfaardt, “especially as those Grade 11 guys were all part of an unbeaten DHL Western Province (Under-16) Grant Khomo team (as Grade Tens) last year.

“It certainly doesn’t mean we will be resting on our laurels, but it’s pleasing to know that our youth rugby is pretty strong at the moment.”

Aside from DHL Western Province’s success at Under-18 Academy and Craven Week level this year, the DHL WP Under-13 team were crowned unofficial champions at U13 level (for the third year in succession), whilst the DHL WP Girls U16 and U18 teams dominated their youth weeks in Oudtshoorn and Durban, respectively.
