Bonus-point win for DHL WP U21 side

PUBLISHED: August 25, 2012

John Dobson’s DHL Western Province Under-21 side claimed a 31-17 bonus point win over Border at a rain-soaked City Park on Saturday afternoon.

Border were always going to be tough opponents in the wet, having beaten the highly-rated Blue Bulls a few weeks ago, and they made the DHL WP U21s work hard for their fourth victory of the 2012 season.

At one stage in the second half, DHL WP U21 led 14-10, with two late tries sealing the win for the home side.

Prop Francois van Wyk scored twice for the DHL WP juniors, with front row colleague Ollie Kebble also dotting down; Van Wyk’s second try (in the 74th minute) securing that crucial bonus-point triumph.

DHL WP Under-21 coach John Dobson was happy with the win, tellingwprugby.com afterwards: “To get a bonus point in those conditions against a good side like that was good.”

He added: “Credit must go to Border for what they have done to produce such a quality Under-21 side.

“The conditions were very tough and that gale meant line-outs were a mess and we couldn’t get our maul going. But we defended well and I was pleased with the commitment shown. It was a big banana skin avoided and we’ve got the very valuable five points in the bank.”
