The DHL Western Province Under-21 side recorded an excellent 34-29 win over the Blue Bulls Under-21s in Pretoria on Friday.
The visitors led 22-9 at half-time and converted their lead into their fifth win – and fourth away from home – of the 2012 season.
The Bulls, who boast a host of SA Under-20 stars in their side and are on top of the log in the Provincial Under-21 competition, beat the DHL WP U21s last time out in Cape Town so it was a great result for John Dobson’s side who are missing a host of players to injury and senior team call-ups.
Dobson said afterwards: “I said during the week that we could do something special up here, and I’m obviously helluva chuffed with this win.
“We scored five tries to three, and even left a few points out there, but the guys also showed plenty of character and guts in the end against a very good Bulls side which came back very strongly in the second half.”
Flyhalf Tim Swiel kicked three conversions and one penalty for the visitors, with fullback Dillyn Leyds, wing Dean Hammond and prop Frans van Wyk (in the first half), and winger David Ambunya and centre Kobus van Wyk (second half) all crossing for WP’s tries.
